18A - Create a Custom Avatar

Ryan Matthews, Small Restaurant Owner, 2019

My customers can be of very diverse backgrounds, but I picture my stereotypical customer looking a lot like Ryan pictured above. I'll go into some more detail about Ryan below.

Ryan is young, is interested in entrepreneurship himself, and is excited to get a restaurant business on it's feet.

When Ryan is not working hard on their restaurant business trying to deliver customer value, he is either spending time his family, watching/playing sports, traveling, or visiting theme parks. In a nutshell, Ryan is open to new experiences, extroverted, and agreeable.

Ryan loves the outdoors, so he drives an off-roading vehicle; I'm thinking something like a Jeep or an FJ Cruiser.

Ryan is young and does not yet have kids, but hopes that when the restaurant business has stable cash flows, he can settle down.

His favorite TV show is Impractical Jokers because of its light-hearted nature and genuine humor. He strives to approach life with as much flexibility and joy as these guys.

Ryan loves philosophy and he loves reading books on Jungian psychology and social interactions. He is interested in people. Specifically, he is interested in operating a respectable business and hopes to leave a positive impact on the community.

Much of Ryan's qualities are very similar to my own. I think I naturally resonated towards this customer as my prototypical one because I feel that my business idea is tied to who I am as a person, and if my customers have values that are similar to my own, it is more enjoyable to work with them and easier to sell them a product.

  1. Hey Jonathan,
It seems like your avatar is very adventurous and always open to trying new things. Being open to new experiences is a great trait in an entrepreneur because it allows them to try more things than someone who is a little safer may try. While that does open them up to more risk it could also push their company forward past their competition.

  2. Johnathan,

I think you did a great job of creating your prototypical customer as well as creating the avatar. Your description of the typical college student was very accurate and believable. I could definitely imagine a person with these specific interests and attributes. I could definitely see how this person would buy into your product. Lastly, you did a great job of pointing out commonalities. I also relate to having a similar customer to myself.

  4. I agree with you 100%! It's good that the customer you create is relatable to who you are because it forms a solid base for you and your customer. It allows you to understand and think like your customer. It helps you anticipate what your customer may think about in future instances. That way you can always stay a few steps ahead of them. It also helps with building good relations with your customers because you'd have something in common with them rather than being distant to where you don't necessarily understand them as a person. Overall, great job on the post!

  5. Hey there Johnathan! Super nice job with this post. Your customer avatar seems very adventurous and smart. Of course, your customer avatar should be relatable to yourself, considering he stemmed from an idea that came straight from your imagination. We all want to create products that could possibly fix something that we personally care about.
